(Back to top) SELENIUM SULFIDE shampoo is used to treat dandruff, seborrhea and minor fungus infections of the scalp and skin. It is available in the 2.25% prescription strength and without a prescription in a 1% strength. What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine? (Back to top) They need to know if you have any of these conditions: •any open or inflamed areas of the skin •an unusual or allergic reaction to selenium sulfide, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives •pregnant or trying to get pregnant •breast-feeding How should I use this medicine? (Back to top) Selenium sulfide is for use only on the skin or scalp; do not take by mouth. Shake well before using. Follow the directions on the bottle. Rinse hands well after use. Do not use your medicine more often than directed or for a longer period of time than ordered by your prescriber or health care professional. To do so may increase the chance of side effects. Do not get selenium sulfide in the eyes. If you do, rinse the eyes out with plenty of cool tap water. Avoid use of selenium sulfide in the genital area. Do not use on inflamed or broken skin. If used on blond, bleached, tinted, grey or permed hair, rinse for at least 5 minutes to minimize the chance for hair discoloration. Selenium sulfide should not be used within 48 hours of applying hair color or permanent wave solutions. Selenium sulfide may damage jewelry; remove any jewelry before use. Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed. What if I miss a dose?
