What is selenium sulfide shampoo? (Back to top)
SELENIUM SULFIDE shampoo is used to treat dandruff, seborrhea and minor fungus infections of the scalp and skin. It is available in the 2.25% prescription strength and without a prescription in a 1% strength.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine? (Back to top)
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
•any open or inflamed areas of the skin
•an unusual or allergic reaction to selenium sulfide, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
•pregnant or trying to get pregnant
•breast-feeding

How should I use this medicine? (Back to top)
Selenium sulfide is for use only on the skin or scalp; do not take by mouth. Shake well before using. Follow the directions on the bottle. Rinse hands well after use. Do not use your medicine more often than directed or for a longer period of time than ordered by your prescriber or health care professional. To do so may increase the chance of side effects.

Do not get selenium sulfide in the eyes. If you do, rinse the eyes out with plenty of cool tap water. Avoid use of selenium sulfide in the genital area. Do not use on inflamed or broken skin.

If used on blond, bleached, tinted, grey or permed hair, rinse for at least 5 minutes to minimize the chance for hair discoloration. Selenium sulfide should not be used within 48 hours of applying hair color or permanent wave solutions.

Selenium sulfide may damage jewelry; remove any jewelry before use.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What if I miss a dose? (Back to top)
If it is almost time for your next dose, use only that dose. Do not use double or extra doses.

What drug(s) may interact with selenium sulfide? (Back to top)
There are no known interactions between selenium sulfide shampoo and other drugs.

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about other skin products you are using. Do not apply selenium sulfide at the same site as other skin preparations without advice.

What side effects may I notice from using selenium sulfide? (Back to top)
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
•lack of healing of the skin condition
•severe redness or irritation of the skin after using selenium sulfide

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
•minor skin irritation

What should I watch for while taking selenium sulfide? (Back to top)
Tell your prescriber or health care professional if your symptoms do not improve after two weeks. Avoid getting selenium sulfide in your eyes.

To prevent spread of the condition, do not share your selenium sulfide shampoo with anyone else.

Where can I keep my medicine? (Back to top)
Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.

Store at room temperature, 15—30 degrees C (59—86 degrees F). Keep tightly closed. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
